Animazonia Mountain Lion Update

Olive Olive

OLIVE: We are sad to report that our beautiful and amazing mountain lion, Olive, has passed away. Olive, one of the "Burbank Kittens", came to Animazonia for permanent sanctuary in 2014. She was a star during her training and enrichment sessions, showing a real joy in accomplishing what was asked of her. Her focus and concentration were a delight to watch.

Olive appeared healthy and all her vital functions tested well, but during a recommended surgical spay, she developed heart complications and did not survive. It was a shock to Animazonia's volunteers and to the veterinary staff and it's been difficult to try to communicate to all who are so lovingly supportive of the Animazonia cats. This very sensitive, special and big-hearted cat will be missed by all who knew her.

LENO: We were concerned about Leno when Olive passed away because she was a large focus of his attention every day. We are pleased to report that, in spite of her loss, Leno is thriving. This is due, in large part, to Leno's benefactor, Bill Hopkins, whose donations fund Leno's continuing education sessions.

These sessions, guided by animal behaviorist, Kristi Slane, not only teach Leno new and desired behaviors but, just as importantly, they keep his mind engaged, preventing the boredom and frustration that often hamper the wellbeing of big cats in captivity. The result is a relaxed, tolerant lion, able to adapt to the unexpected changes of daily life with a minimum of stress.

Bill's donations also fund ongoing enrichment activities that provide Leno with stimulation and variety. Scented items at various location in his enclosure, egg crates or large cardboard boxes, feathers, leaves or bags on a branch, there is no end to the options for enrichment.

P22 DAY Celebration 2018

In October, Animazonia joined hundreds of attendees at the P22 Day celebration in Griffith Park. P22, our local celebrity Mountain Lion, is the only known Mountain Lion to have successfully crossed the 101 freeway from the Santa Monica Mountains; he now makes his home in the Griffith Park area.

Animazonia's exhibit, alongside dozens of other animal and environmental welfare groups, helped tell the story about the critical importance of wildlands preservation in maintaining viable habitat for Mountain Lions and other native animal species. Habitat loss is a primary reason for diminishing animal populations and could lead to extinction, especially for apex predators like the Mountain Lion.

Dozens of kids and adults took time to color Animazonia's Mountain Lion masks. Here are just a few of their creative efforts!
