Here is a sample letter you can send to your representative to urge him/her to get Haley’s Act passed into law.
Dear _______________,
On behalf of our more than ten million supporters *, we ask you to co-sponsor H.R. 1947, Haley’s Act. Congresswoman Nancy Boyda (D-KS) and the Kansas delegation have introduced this bipartisan legislation which is designed to protect the public from attacks by captive big cats (such as lions and tigers) and to enhance the welfare and quality of life of these animals. H.R. 1947 addresses the very serious and often fatal results when individuals and organizations, licensed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), exhibit captive big cats and allow the public to be in direct contact with them.
Haley’s Act will prevent senseless, avoidable and tragic incidents. It amends the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) by prohibiting direct contact between big cats and the public, giving the USDA the authority it needs to address and public safety. Haley’s Act also raises the paltry fines of the AWA, which many facilities consider the cost of doing business.
Congress should take swift action to prevent future tragedies. Please contact Lindsey Matese in Representative Nancy Boyda's office at 5-6601 to become a co-sponsor of Haley’s Act.
Thank you,
Your name and address or district.
